The Project
Our objective is to provide our clients/end users a product for the long-term that is functional, robust and of high quality. In addition, we want to provide our students with funding that directly supports these projects in order to enhance their student design experience even further.
Often our student teams are limited by cost and products and processes meet design requirements but could be greatly improved. Our community partners and clients could benefit more from the student projects if the student teams are not constrained by a low or no budget. The Center takes on these projects at a reduced or zero base level of funding which makes delivering a robust design due to limiting project budgets challenging.
Who We Are
The Innovation Center and Design and Manufacturing Clinic completes over 140 projects per year for our senior engineering students in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Computer and all the disciplines within Engineering Technology. The Center is committed to educating the whole student. As such, we offer a spectrum of projects to our students. The three (3) project categories are Industry, Entrepreneurial and Community.
Many of these projects are industry sponsored however the Center is increasing the number of community based projects that serve our larger community and the common good. Specifically, we partner with local organizations in the community. These projects serve individuals with special physical disabilities/challenges such as: United Rehabilitation Services and May We Help. In addition the Center also conducts larger scale projects that provide more efficient and effective designs or products and processes to our community partners such as the Dayton Food Bank, Mission of Mary Cooperative, Miami Valley Meals and the Gem City Market, just to name a few. Finally, the Innovation Center collaborates with other experiential and service learning departments and faculty such as ETHOS and the SOE faculty from a variety of disciplines.
The Impact
Design projects for the common good is rooted in our strong Academic, Catholic and Marianist mission. Providing funding for these projects would offer a more robust experience, and our students, faculty and client/community partners would benefit greatly. Robust experiences come in many forms for students. Diversity, equity and inclusion are foundational Catholic principles. Diversity is a gift of God's creation, and we are committed to honoring the intrinsic value and dignity of all people.
Your gift directly impacts:
- $25 - Transportation for a student team to research, collection of information in the field.
- $50 - Testing devices/equipment necessary to verify and validate the device
- $100 - Materials and processing for Prototyping
- $150 - Final Design materials and processing for final implementation
- $200 - Large scale building supplies
What Your Gifts Will Do
By working toward a design solution that has the potential to increase the quality and functionality of life for those in need. ALL donations will go directly into the student project account for purchase of materials and processes needed for a successful robust design for our clients.
As a comprehensive university, we commit ourselves: to educating students within a vibrant learning community; to strong programs in both liberal arts and sciences and the professional disciplines; to collaboration across disciplinary and organizational boundaries.
