About

The Project

Good writing is an essential skill across all professions. English majors are expert writers and their skills are in high demand. Yet early professional learning experiences, like internships, can be a barrier to students because they are often expected to work for free. Our program aims to reduce barriers to internship experiences by providing support to any student who secures a 3-credit unpaid professional writing internship with a Dayton community organization in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Who We Are

The Writing Internship Program is designed for undergraduate English majors and minors to:

  • gain professional writing and editing experience before graduation,
  • discover the impact of their writing outside of the classroom,
  • explore interests related to their vocational calling, and
  • experience how strong writing skills can be used in a specific position or career.

The Impact

Our goal is to reach $5,000.00. This amount would allow us to place 10 Writing Interns with Dayton community organizations over the 2022-2023 academic year, and to provide each of these Writing Interns with a $500 grant-in-aid.

Funds for this program will provide students with a grant-in-aid to support their professional development during a full-semester, 3-credit Writing Internship. Students will use these funds to offset the costs associated with an unpaid internship: clothing/professional dress, travel or transportation, registration for attendance at professional networking events, meals, etc. These everyday costs pose real barriers for students, especially those who cannot afford to give up time from a paying job to pursue this professional opportunity.

If we exceed our goal, we will increase the award amount for the 10 Writing Interns from $500 to disperse all funds equally. Even if we cannot reach our goal amount, we will distribute funds to Writing Interns based on an appropriate award amount.

What Your Gifts Will Do

Your gift will ensure that students will have access to a high-impact learning opportunity through a Writing Internship. Through your direct support of our students' work with Dayton community organizations, your gift also impacts the Dayton community, whose non-profit organizations rely on our Writing Interns for support and servant leadership.

All gifts make a real impact, so please give what you are able!

Your support will greatly impact the Department of English Writing Internship Program. Please share this page with your networks - friends, family, co-workers, fellow students, alumni, etc. and encourage them to give in support of our program.

Thanks for Your Support!

Updates
One More Day!! 1 Day, 1 Dayton is Upon Us!

Dear Friends -

As we eagerly await tomorrow's 1 Day, 1 Dayton Annual Day of Giving, I hope you'll continue to share our campaign with your friends, colleagues...anyone who supports good writing!

I'm also pleased to share another story of our Writing Internship Program's impact. Senior Maddy Bartsche writes:

During the summer after my sophomore year, I was able to intern at a business-to-business recycling magazine. This writing internship was something that transformed me from a nervous underclassman English major into the professional I am today. The internship provided me with ample opportunities to conduct interviews, research unfamiliar topics, and write feature stories. I remember the pride I felt when I got the July issue of Recycling Today in the mail and saw my story in print. Writing internships help students realize their passions and validate the value they can bring to the word through their writing.

Thank YOU for helping to make opportunities like Maddy's available to our Writing Interns!
