About

What is the Project?

Personal financial literacy is "the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well-being." (2008 Annual Report to the President) Only 33 percent of Americans can answer 4 or more of 5 basic questions on personal finance. This lack of knowledge has implications for access to college, choices in student loans, leaving money on the table when filing tax returns, and more.

Flyers for Financial Literacy is a service-learning initiative where accounting and other financially-oriented students at the University of Dayton will use their financial knowledge and skills to assist others at the University of Dayton and in the greater Dayton community with personal financial processes, decisions, and education.

The Project timeline is as follows:

Fall 2020

  • Raise funds (this campaign!)

Spring 2021

  • Recruit student leaders
  • Plan Phase I operations
  • Develop strategic relationships at UD and in the Dayton community
  • Prepare Flyers for Financial Literacy headquarters

Fall 2021

  • Begin Phase I operations

Who are we?

The University of Dayton Department of Accounting faculty and staff are enthusiastic about starting up and supporting this service-learning initiative for many years in the future. Beginning in Spring 2021, our students also will serve as leaders of this initiative.

What impact will this project have?

Consistent with the goals of a service-learning initiative, Flyers for Financial Literacy will benefit its clients through activities such as

  • Personal income tax preparation through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) preparation
  • Education on subsidized and unsubsidized loans
  • Education on personal budgeting, credit scores, and decisions surrounding employment, including W-4s, health insurance, 401k, and more!

Flyers for Financial Literacy also will benefit the UD students who participate in this service-learning initiative by providing opportunities to

  • Develop a lifelong service mentality regarding the specialized skillset held by financial professionals
  • Practice the communication of both sensitive and often negative information in a professional manner
  • Develop cultural and other interpersonal competencies
  • Exercise leadership skills

What will your gifts do?

Your gifts will provide the start-up funds for this initiative including establishing its designated headquarters. While many people are working from home in the current environment, students' on-campus homes are often shared with housemates and roommates. Their work cannot take place in a shared environment. It requires a quiet, confidential, and appropriately social-distanced workspace. Your funds will be used to transform a space for this purpose.

How can you help?

  • Provide any financial support that you are able to provide. No donation is too big or too small!
  • Share this page on social media, through email, and through text. Every donation can make a difference!
  • Let us know if you would like to give your time and talents to support this initiative. The Flyers for Financial Literacy team will need support from alumni and friends through an Advisory Council and training!

Thanks for Your Support!

Flyers and Flyer Friends:

Thank you so much for your quick responses and support! We are halfway to our goal and have less than 2 weeks until our deadline. We are pleased to report that we already have students volunteering to be part of the inaugural Flyers for Financial Literacy group. Please continue to spread the word to help make this initiative a reality.

Kind regards,
